records analyzed: 1,877,252
The Most Comprehensive Map of French Web Technologies
What technologies power the French business web in 2026? To answer this question, IBLead crawled and analyzed 1,877,252 French business websites between January and February 2026, scanning each page for over 160 distinct technologies across 18 categories. This is, to our knowledge, the largest France-specific web technology study ever conducted.
The scope is significant. France has approximately 4.8 million businesses listed on Google Maps. Of these, 2,675,140 (55.6%) have a website URL. Our technology scanner successfully crawled and analyzed 1,877,252 of those sites — representing 70.2% of all French business websites and 39.0% of all listed businesses. The remaining sites either returned errors, redirected to social media pages, or had no detectable technology footprint.
This study serves as the master overview of the entire IBLead technology dataset. For deeper analysis of specific categories, see our dedicated studies on CMS market share, e-commerce platforms, GDPR cookie consent compliance, and analytics & tracking tools.
Technology Adoption by Category: The Full Ranking
The 18 technology categories we track reveal a clear hierarchy in adoption. Analytics leads, accessibility lags, and the gap between the two is enormous:
| Category | Sites | % of 1.88M sites |
|---|---|---|
| Analytics | 1,276,749 | 68.0% |
| Framework | 1,127,175 | 60.0% |
| CMS | 1,062,379 | 56.6% |
| Schema / Structured Data | 992,093 | 52.8% |
| Meta Generator | 899,918 | 47.9% |
| Security | 626,216 | 33.4% |
| Tag Manager | 597,103 | 31.8% |
| Maps | 548,470 | 29.2% |
| CDN | 524,760 | 28.0% |
| Cookie Consent | 431,361 | 23.0% |
| Ads / Pixels | 256,151 | 13.6% |
| Reviews | 206,145 | 11.0% |
| A/B Testing | 92,290 | 4.9% |
| Payment | 69,289 | 3.7% |
| Email Marketing | 54,899 | 2.9% |
| Booking | 27,478 | 1.5% |
| Chat | 20,855 | 1.1% |
| Accessibility | 2,821 | 0.2% |
Several patterns stand out. The top three categories — Analytics, Framework, and CMS — each appear on more than half of all sites, reflecting the baseline stack of a typical French business website. The bottom five categories (Email Marketing, Booking, Chat, Accessibility) all fall below 3%, suggesting these tools remain the province of more sophisticated or specialized businesses.
CMS: WordPress Dominates, But the Long Tail Is Rich
1,062,379 sites (56.6%) use a detectable content management system. WordPress alone powers 728,215 of them — 68.5% of all CMS users. This is an extraordinary concentration for a single platform, though it is broadly in line with global trends where WordPress holds 60-65% market share.
| CMS | Sites | % of tech sites | % of CMS users |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress | 728,215 | 38.8% | 68.5% |
| WooCommerce | 283,370 | 15.1% | 26.7% |
| Wix | 107,764 | 5.7% | 10.1% |
| Drupal | 73,553 | 3.9% | 6.9% |
| PrestaShop | 38,182 | 2.0% | 3.6% |
| HubSpot CMS | 28,849 | 1.5% | 2.7% |
| Joomla | 23,696 | 1.3% | 2.2% |
| Shopify | 19,443 | 1.0% | 1.8% |
| Webflow | 14,515 | 0.8% | 1.4% |
| Magento | 12,894 | 0.7% | 1.2% |
| TYPO3 | 10,131 | 0.5% | 1.0% |
| Squarespace | 10,736 | 0.6% | 1.0% |
| Jimdo | 11,766 | 0.6% | 1.1% |
| Blogger | 7,045 | 0.4% | 0.7% |
| Odoo | 4,705 | 0.3% | 0.4% |
A key finding: WooCommerce runs on 283,370 sites, meaning 38.9% of all WordPress business sites in France have an e-commerce component. This makes WooCommerce the de facto standard for small and mid-size online stores in France. PrestaShop (38,182 sites), the historically dominant French e-commerce platform, now holds less than a sixth of WooCommerce's volume.
The rise of no-code website builders is visible but limited: Wix (107,764), Squarespace (10,736), Jimdo (11,766), and Webflow (14,515) collectively power around 145,000 sites — about 13.6% of CMS users. For the full CMS breakdown, see our CMS Market Share study.
Analytics: The GA4 Migration Crisis
Analytics is the single most adopted technology category, with 1,276,749 sites (68.0%) using at least one analytics tool. But the headline number masks a deeply fragmented landscape:
| Tool | Sites | % of tech sites | % of analytics users |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics UA (dead since July 2023) | 999,868 | 53.3% | 78.3% |
| Google Analytics 4 | 500,641 | 26.7% | 39.2% |
| Matomo | 122,471 | 6.5% | 9.6% |
| Hotjar | 33,640 | 1.8% | 2.6% |
| Microsoft Clarity | 18,772 | 1.0% | 1.5% |
| Plausible | 17,914 | 1.0% | 1.4% |
| Fathom | 2,776 | 0.1% | 0.2% |
| Amplitude | 2,561 | 0.1% | 0.2% |
The most striking finding: 999,868 sites (53.3%) still carry Universal Analytics tracking code, despite Google having shut down UA data processing in July 2023. This code no longer collects any data — it simply sits in the HTML, adding page weight and making network requests that go nowhere. The presence of dead UA code is a strong proxy for website maintenance: a site that still has UA code in March 2026 has almost certainly not been meaningfully updated in over two years.
Only 500,641 sites (26.7%) have migrated to GA4. Many sites have both UA and GA4 code (dual tagging from the migration period), but the low GA4 number confirms that the majority of French businesses never completed the transition.
Matomo at 6.5% is a standout figure. Globally, Matomo's market share is estimated at 1-2%. The French rate of 6.5% — more than three times the global average — reflects a strong GDPR-driven preference for self-hosted, privacy-first analytics. For the complete analytics breakdown, see our Analytics & Tracking study.
Advertising Pixels: Facebook Dominates, TikTok Emerges
256,151 sites (13.6%) use at least one advertising pixel. While this may seem modest, it represents the subset of businesses actively investing in digital advertising:
| Ads Pixel | Sites | % of tech sites |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Pixel (Meta) | 182,799 | 9.7% |
| Google Ads | 111,155 | 5.9% |
| Microsoft Ads (Bing) | 19,373 | 1.0% |
| TikTok Pixel | 9,803 | 0.5% |
| LinkedIn Insight | 7,899 | 0.4% |
| Criteo | 6,257 | 0.3% |
| Pinterest Tag | 3,409 | 0.2% |
| Taboola | 3,538 | 0.2% |
| Twitter Pixel | 2,308 | 0.1% |
Facebook Pixel is the clear leader, present on 182,799 sites — nearly 72% of all sites with ads pixels. Google Ads conversion tracking follows at 111,155 sites. TikTok Pixel at 9,803 sites signals emerging adoption, particularly among e-commerce brands targeting younger demographics. Criteo (6,257 sites), the French ad-tech giant, maintains a notable presence in its home market.
A critical compliance concern: our GDPR cookie consent study found that 72.8% of sites with advertising pixels have no consent banner. Ads pixels are among the most privacy-invasive trackers, making this gap particularly problematic under GDPR.
Cookie Consent: Only 23.0% Show a Banner
431,361 sites (23.0%) display a cookie consent banner. The remaining 77.5% — over 1.2 million sites — operate without any visible consent mechanism. Given that 68.0% of sites use analytics tools (most of which require consent), this represents one of the largest compliance gaps in the French digital landscape.
| Consent Tool | Sites | Market Share |
|---|---|---|
| Complianz | 109,416 | 25.4% |
| Tarteaucitron | 106,396 | 24.7% |
| OneTrust | 58,365 | 13.5% |
| Axeptio | 50,617 | 11.7% |
| Didomi | 45,247 | 10.5% |
| Cookiebot | 37,002 | 8.6% |
| CookieYes | 31,104 | 7.2% |
| Iubenda | 4,205 | 1.0% |
The consent market is led by a duopoly: Complianz (a WordPress plugin, 25.4%) and Tarteaucitron (a French open-source solution, 24.7%). French-made tools (Tarteaucitron, Axeptio, Didomi) collectively hold 46.9% of the consent market — a rare case of local solutions outperforming international competitors. For the full compliance analysis, see our GDPR Cookie Consent study.
Tag Managers: Google's Near-Monopoly
597,103 sites (31.8%) use a tag manager, and Google Tag Manager (GTM) accounts for an overwhelming 576,442 of them — 96.4% of tag manager users:
| Tag Manager | Sites | % of tech sites |
|---|---|---|
| Google Tag Manager | 576,442 | 30.7% |
| Adobe Launch | 27,946 | 1.5% |
| Tealium | 7,965 | 0.4% |
| Commanders Act | 2,604 | 0.1% |
GTM's dominance has an important implication for technology detection: many advertising pixels and analytics tools are loaded dynamically through GTM rather than being hard-coded in the HTML. This means our scanner may undercount technologies that are exclusively loaded via GTM containers.
Frameworks and Libraries: jQuery’s Stubborn Reign
1,127,175 sites (60.0%) use at least one detectable framework or library:
| Framework | Sites | % of tech sites |
|---|---|---|
| jQuery | 889,113 | 47.4% |
| Bootstrap | 302,931 | 16.1% |
| Next.js | 90,009 | 4.8% |
| Vue.js | 67,867 | 3.6% |
| Nuxt | 31,416 | 1.7% |
| Angular | 23,304 | 1.2% |
| Tailwind CSS | 12,173 | 0.6% |
| Gatsby | 3,394 | 0.2% |
| Svelte | 1,516 | 0.1% |
jQuery at 47.4% means nearly half of all French business websites still load this library, first released in 2006. Much of this is indirect — WordPress themes, Bootstrap, and many plugins bundle jQuery as a dependency. But the sheer volume (889,113 sites) signals that modernization of the French business web is far from complete.
Next.js (4.8%) and Vue.js (3.6%) represent the modern wave. Together, Vue + Nuxt (3.6% + 1.7% = 5.3%) slightly exceed Next.js alone, making the Vue ecosystem the most popular modern JavaScript framework stack in France. Tailwind CSS at 0.7% (12,173 sites) has exploded in developer communities but has not yet reached mainstream business adoption.
Security: reCAPTCHA and Cloudflare Lead
626,216 sites (33.4%) use at least one detectable security tool:
| Security Tool | Sites | % of tech sites |
|---|---|---|
| reCAPTCHA | 434,716 | 23.2% |
| Cloudflare | 221,764 | 11.8% |
| hCaptcha | 41,044 | 2.2% |
| Turnstile | 20,245 | 1.1% |
Google's reCAPTCHA remains the default bot protection for nearly a quarter of French business sites. Turnstile (20,245 sites), Cloudflare's privacy-focused CAPTCHA alternative launched in 2022, is gaining traction as a reCAPTCHA replacement among GDPR-conscious sites.
Maps: Google Maps at 77.4% of Map Users
548,470 sites (29.2%) embed a map, with Google Maps dominating at 426,241 sites (77.4% of map users):
| Maps Provider | Sites | % of tech sites |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps | 426,241 | 22.7% |
| Leaflet | 107,276 | 5.7% |
| OpenStreetMap | 56,575 | 3.0% |
| Mapbox | 28,465 | 1.5% |
Leaflet (5.7%) is the leading open-source mapping library, often used with OpenStreetMap tiles. The 107,276 Leaflet sites show that a meaningful minority of French businesses have opted for a non-Google mapping solution.
CDN: Cloudflare Leads, jsDelivr Serves Libraries
524,760 sites (28.0%) use a detectable CDN:
| CDN | Sites | % of tech sites |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare CDN | 310,436 | 16.5% |
| jsDelivr | 153,676 | 8.2% |
| unpkg | 126,389 | 6.7% |
| CloudFront (AWS) | 70,959 | 3.8% |
| Bunny CDN | 4,955 | 0.3% |
Cloudflare CDN at 16.5% reflects its dual role as both CDN and security provider. jsDelivr (8.2%) and unpkg (6.7%) are primarily used to serve open-source JavaScript libraries. CloudFront (3.8%) signals AWS infrastructure use among more technically mature businesses.
Payment: Stripe Leads the French Market
69,289 sites (3.7%) have detectable payment integration:
| Payment | Sites | % of tech sites |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe | 48,160 | 2.6% |
| PayPal | 17,831 | 1.0% |
| Klarna | 2,242 | 0.1% |
| Alma | 1,917 | 0.1% |
| MangoPay | 955 | 0.1% |
Stripe dominates with 48,160 sites (69.5% of payment users). Alma (1,917 sites) is a French buy-now-pay-later solution growing in the domestic market. For more on payment tools in e-commerce, see our E-commerce Platforms study.
Email Marketing: Brevo Leads in France
54,899 sites (2.9%) have detectable email marketing tools:
| Email Marketing | Sites | % of tech sites |
|---|---|---|
| Brevo (ex-Sendinblue) | 24,654 | 1.3% |
| HubSpot Forms | 8,399 | 0.4% |
| Mailchimp | 9,067 | 0.5% |
| Klaviyo | 7,051 | 0.4% |
| Mailjet | 3,704 | 0.2% |
Brevo (formerly Sendinblue), headquartered in Paris, leads with 24,654 sites — nearly 45% of detectable email marketing deployments. Mailjet (3,704 sites), another French platform, adds to the strong local ecosystem. Together, French email tools power more than half of all detectable email marketing in France.
Chat, A/B Testing, Reviews & Booking
A/B Testing (92,290 sites — 4.9%)
| Tool | Sites | % of tech sites |
|---|---|---|
| AB Tasty | 55,744 | 3.0% |
| Google Optimize (sunset 2023) | 17,056 | 0.9% |
| Kameleoon | 14,495 | 0.8% |
| Optimizely | 3,644 | 0.2% |
| VWO | 3,610 | 0.2% |
AB Tasty, a French A/B testing platform, dominates with 55,744 sites (60.4% of A/B testing users). Kameleoon (14,495 sites) is another French player. Together they hold 76% of the market — yet another category where French companies lead at home. Google Optimize (17,056 sites) was sunset in September 2023 — dead code remnants.
Reviews (206,145 sites — 11.0%)
| Tool | Sites | % of tech sites |
|---|---|---|
| Google Reviews | 157,585 | 8.4% |
| Trustpilot | 35,197 | 1.9% |
| Avis Vérifiés | 13,094 | 0.7% |
Google Reviews widgets dominate at 157,585 sites. Avis Vérifiés (13,094 sites), a French review platform owned by SKEEPERS, maintains a solid domestic niche.
Chat (20,855 sites — 1.1%)
| Tool | Sites | % of tech sites |
|---|---|---|
| Crisp | 5,309 | 0.3% |
| Zendesk | 4,636 | 0.2% |
| Intercom | 3,486 | 0.2% |
| Tawk.to | 3,570 | 0.2% |
| Tidio | 2,640 | 0.1% |
Crisp, a French live-chat solution from Nantes, leads with 5,309 sites. The chat market is remarkably fragmented, with no single tool holding more than 25%.
Booking (27,478 sites — 1.5%)
Calendly dominates booking with 26,488 sites (96.5%). SimplyBook (824 sites) trails far behind.
The French Tech Ecosystem: Local Champions
One of the most unexpected findings across all 18 categories is the strength of French-made tools in their home market:
- Cookie Consent: Tarteaucitron (24.7%) + Axeptio (11.7%) + Didomi (10.5%) = 46.9% combined
- A/B Testing: AB Tasty (60.4%) + Kameleoon (15.7%) = 76.1% combined
- Email Marketing: Brevo (44.9%) + Mailjet (6.7%) = 51.7% combined
- Chat: Crisp leads at 25.5%
- Payment: Alma (2.8% of payment users) + MangoPay (1.4%)
This pattern suggests French businesses, particularly SMEs, prefer local tools — driven by language support, GDPR/CNIL alignment, local customer service, and euro pricing.
Key Takeaways
- 68.0% use analytics but only 23.0% have cookie consent — the biggest compliance gap on the French web, affecting over 986,000 sites
- 53.3% still carry dead Universal Analytics code — most sites have not been updated since Google shut down UA in July 2023
- jQuery at 47.4% — legacy code is deeply embedded, largely through WordPress themes and plugins
- WordPress at 68.5% of CMS users — higher concentration than global averages, with WooCommerce turning 38% into stores
- French tools dominate consent, A/B testing, and email marketing — local champions outperforming global competitors at home
- Only 0.2% have accessibility tools — the weakest category, a massive gap as EU accessibility regulations tighten
- Matomo at 6.5% — France leads in privacy-first analytics, more than triple the global average
- Stripe dominates payment (69.5%) while French BNPL provider Alma carves a growing niche
